ooc: yes, odd title... on purpose. ;]
bic:
The day was a fine one; the birds sang happily from their perches, the sky was clear and blue, and the sun shone bright and warm. Every so often, a small puff of white would slowly crawl across the sky, only to be lost on the horizon. In the stables, the sunny day had caused many riders to quickly tack up and head out on the trails. Most of the trail riders, if not all, had headed for the lake. One of the last riders in the stables stood quietly grooming her horse, his dappled bay coat shining magnificently. His coat was clean right down to his small white hind socks. Once finished putting her brush away, Marie turned and smiled at the horse. She then quietly reached up patted the stallion's proud neck. "Ready for a nice workout, Socks?" she quietly asked the horse. Any time, girl. he responded, flexing his muscles. Marie chuckled, then turned to grab her bridle. She then proceeded to put it on, and in no time had the saddle in place as well. Quickly putting her helmet on, Marie then took the reins and began leading Socks to the mounting block outside the stable doors. In a matter of moments, Marie was out the door and was greeted with warm sunshine. "No wonder everyone went for a trail ride." she said under her breath, then sighed. She had to work with Socks; he had a big show coming up, and he needed to be in top condition. Stepping up the mounting block, Marie then put her foot in the stirrup irons, and lightly swung her other leg over the saddle. Once her boots were in place, she fixed her position in the saddle, then asked Socks for a walk. He responded with no hesitation. "Good boy. Hopefully, you'll stay good for the whole workout." Marie said quietly to the stallion. We'll see; it depends on how I'm feeling when we get in the ring. In a few minutes, Socks and Marie reached the Outdoor Arenas, and Marie steered Socks into the jumping arena. Various jumps were already set up; they were almost never taken down, unless it was raining. Clicking her tongue, Marie asked Socks for a trot. In response, he quickly took up a smooth, flowing gait. "Good boy." Marie said with a pleased smile, praising her mount. You don't have to tell me what I already know. Socks said jokingly. Once finished trotting in both directions, Marie transitioned into cantering. No complications. It wasn't until the jumps came along that the problems began starting. At the third refusal, Marie sighed and sat a moment in frustration. "Ugh, what am I gonna do with you, Socks?" she grumbled, looking sternly at the horse. Bring me on a trail ride with everyone else. Sighing again, Marie asked Socks for a walk, and began circling the jumps. "Try to get a hold of yourself, 'kay?" she growled to the horse. As if in response, Socks grunted and flicked her tail. After thoroughly introducing Socks to the jumps, Marie circled and headed in a straight line toward the first jump, a vertical. Socks was headed toward it at a relaxed canter, and gracefully launched over it. "Took long enough." Marie said to herself, a little more cheerfully. After jumping a few more jumps, Marie asked Socks for a halt and took a quick breather. "Good boy, Socks." she said, this time with genuine happiness. She patted his neck in praise for his good performance. Why thank you. the horse responded, a smile evident in his voice. Asking for a walk, Marie began to cool Socks down. "Take a quick breather before we go around a second time." she said half to herself, half to the horse. As she walked Socks, Marie thought forward to the trails; she probably couldn't ride to the lake today, since Socks would be too tired from the workout she was giving him now. Shrugging to herself, Marie continued to ride her horse, hoping for the day to be more eventful later.

Like everyone else, Aso had started out on a trail ride, but he turned back once he noticed that everyone was going there. Ugh…conformity much? He pulled Hiki to a stop and turned her around, much to the mare’s despair. Hiki tossed her head and gave a half rear, snorting her displeasure. “Come on Hiki…we’ll go down there when there are less people,” he muttered, giving her a quick pat on the neck and nudging her into a smooth trot back to the stables. The mare laid her ears back, clearly displeased. Pfft…I see how it is, you’re going to make me sweat… she muttered, shaking her head and quickening her pace. Aso had a feeling that something was going to happen and he grabbed hold of some mane before Hiki reared up and took off towards the stable.
“Hey! Hiki!” he screamed and pulled back, trying to bring the mare in a circle to slow her down. Hiki didn’t respond, and continued at her gallop. You like this? Huh? she asked, kicking up her heels and going faster. Aso continued to pull on the reins, and dug his heels down, pushing his body weight back on her haunches. Did absolutely nothing. Hiki raced towards the outdoor arena, where the gate had been left open. She raced into it, not noticing the other rider who was walking on the opposite side of the arena. She did, smell the other horse, and slowed a bit, trying to find out where that scent came from.
Taking that moment, Aso steered the mare towards the first jump, thinking that would slow her down, and quickly got into the two-point position. At the last second, Hiki noticed the jump, and slowed down before leaping over it. Aso then turned her towards the other jumps and she hopped over them with ease before he pulled her to a sliding stop. Both of them were sweaty and breathing hard. Aso could feel his heart racing, and his arms felt weak. “Oh God…Hiki what the heck was that?” he screamed and let go of the reins to smack himself in the head. The mare stood there, sides heaving, head down. Ha! That was amazing! Let’s go again! she neighed, flicking her tail. She was oddly happy about the incident.
Aso shook his head, wiping the sweat from his brow before looking around to make sure no one had gotten hurt. He finally noticed the other rider and recognized her as Marie. But, she wasn’t on Firefly today, so he wondered if that was her other horse. Picking up the reins, he kicked Hiki lightly into a walk and rode her around the arena to cool her down. The mare still seemed to have energy though, and was pulling at the bit, trying to get out of the arena and head to the lake. “No…not after that stunt, you’re staying here,” he muttered, giving her a light slap on the butt. The mare bucked and shook her head. Not fair! she whined.
